Economic status of Spain 2021

Alex de Pablos Lopez3 min

I am not an expert on the subject, neither political nor economic. That is precisely why I try to be aware in the best possible way, receiving information from the best.

I used graphics in Spanish. Sorry about that. Even so, I included small text to try comment those, so, I hope it is enough for their understanding.

In this case, the trigger that encouraged me to write about this was the podcast 201 of Value Investing FM (in Spanish) where its protagonists Paco Lodeiro and Adrián Godás make a brilliant summary of the current economic and financial situation today.

You will not find opinions but data from sources that may be more or less contrasted.

Then I leave you what I found most interesting in the points they deal with, and I will try to provide a source or graph that visually shows said information.

  • The evolution of GDP by countries and regions in 2020 and 2021

AVERAGE of GDP growth in the world

In that graph on the web datos.bancomundial.org we can see that in 2020 the average GDP growth was -3.3%.

You know that I am currently residing in the United States. So let me include it as well when displaying country specific data.

Looking individually what was the growth in Spain and in the United States for that same year we have these data:

GDP GROWTH IN 2020 IN SPAIN AND THE US

  • GDP growth expectations in 2022

GDP GROWTH PROJECTION FOR 2022

Europe had a greater impact in 2020 and the forecast for the rebound in 2021 is also lower. In 2022 it seems that the projections are equal.

  • Current inflation in the world

GENERAL CPI IN THE US

CPI IN SPAIN

According to datosmacro.expansion.com, accumulated inflation in the United States and in Spain is quite similar, at around 6.5%.

  • The big difference between the labor market situation in the US and Spain

UNEMPLOYMENT IN SPAIN (INE)

According to the INE, Spain stands at 14.57% unemployment.

If we take a look at the last months available for both countries, in Spain it would be October and in the US it would be November.

These are the data:

UNEMPLOYMENT IN SPAIN IN OCTOBER 2021

UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE US IN NOVEMBER 2021

And reviewing the general unemployment data, these are the data for each country.

GENERAL UNEMPLOYMENT IN SPAIN IN 2020 and 2019

GENERAL UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE US in 2020 and 2019

I don’t want to go into analysis and I do want to let the data speak for itself. But I didn’t want to overlook the youth unemployment figure … 😖

  • Public and private indebtedness worldwide

PUBLIC DEBT IN SPAIN in 2019 and 2020

PUBLIC DEBT IN THE US in 2019 and 2020

Data again from https://datosmacro.expansion.com/.

The United States snatches the first place in public debt from us. The percentages with respect to GDP exceed 100% in both countries, but 133% in the USA exceeds 120% in Spain by 13 points.

The increase in debt due to money printing has been remarkable in both countries.

And although in the podcast they talk about some other interesting points such as

  • Real estate market in the US and Spain

  • Central bank interest rates

  • Stock market profitability in 2021

I’m going to leave the graphs and data here and invite you to listen to the podcast, which is a great and entertaining way to catch up. They speak clear and not too much fast, so if you are on your way to learn Spanish, this could be also a great opportunity!

To finish, I leave this comparison between the United States and Spain in which many other factors not mentioned above can be seen in detail.
